A Thought-Provoking Expo
By Coco Ruan MYP9(2)
On March 21st, 2014, our school attended the Action for Service Expo in Suzhou Singapore International School(SSIS) with other guests including Nanjing International School(NIS), Taihu International School(TIS) and Shanghai Jing Cai High School International Department(JCID). Indeed, every school showcases its eliteness through the introduction and the video, yet the most vital and impressive part is the expo itself.
All the schools did a good job in the expo, and they all bring something unique and outstanding to share. As an illustration, SSIS has a special cat adoption project in which students come up with a practical idea to take care of abandoned cats without taking them home. This works fantastically with students whose parents are against pets adoption and those who don’t have time to look after these cats. SSIS also have other projects including students ambassador club which help new or transferred students adjust to the school environment, yearbook club where students design and contact with copying company and make their yearbooks by themselves. On the other hand, NIS brought their Ting Ting deaf school project which is a outstanding sharing and exchanging program instead of an one-way donation. Specifically, special teachers come the NIS to teach them silence language, whereas NIS students come there every semester to have organized activities. Last but not least, JCID shares their free teaching program for immigrant children who fail to receive proper education. They formed this idea because as they students who enjoy good living quality they realize the huge difference between the rich and the poor. This reflects their deep thinking about some current problems in the city which are often ignored by us.
In addition, we also shared different ways to get money for charity. SSIS guest speakers suggests that we can do it by preparing and selling healthy breakfast inside the schools. This creates a win-win situation because a lot of students are too rush in the morning to have breakfast.
Besides sharing, the ultimate purpose of this expo is to improve our own projects based on elite experienced. After this expo, students eagerly shared their phone number and contact information. Since most students are studying in MYP program, this expo really gives everyone a fantastic opportunity to start thinking about their personal projects in DP.

Life Domino in Suzhou
——Action for Service Expo Report

On March 21, a multitude of WFLMS student representatives went to Suzhou to participate an IB Action for Service Expo, conducted by Suzhou Singapore International School(SSIS), in order to share school various activities and experiences. Besides of our attendance, five schools also joined this Expo: Suzhou Singapore International School(SSIS), Shanghai Jincai High School International Division, Nanjing International School, Taihu International School, and Suzhou Eton House International School.
This Action for Service Expo is mainly about sharing the experiences about school’s internal and external social activities in order to elevate students’ social service awareness as well as study others’ lessons. For this Expo, WFLMS came up with an idea about Life Domino in order to present our indoor and outdoor social service activities. We organized our activities from five branches: in school, in community, in Shanghai, in China, in world, which symbolizes MYP Roots and Shoots club, the project of the Golden Wedding Ceremony, the Metro Volunteers, Charity and Dabie Mountain, Fuyang program, and the Global Water Awareness. We used the idea of domino to showcase that every single service is able to trigger the entire project in order to illustrate our action and service from local to global community.
The entire Expo maintained around one day which included the introduction from every school, familiarization(ice breaking), expo presentation, and video sharing. From one day experience, we were not only the one who brought our school’s fantastic projects out of Shanghai, but also the one who studied others’ projects and experiences during the presentations. It was a great chance to be a sharer and listener in this project, and it left WFLMS students a wider but also profound understanding of the definition of social service.
